One of the most important recent stories in the subscription economy concerns Netflix and a ruling by the Court of Rome that could affect many Italian users.

The case was brought by Movimento Consumatori against Netflix Services Italy S.r.l. The court found that some clauses used by Netflix to change subscription prices were invalid because they did not provide sufficiently clear and transparent reasons for unilateral price increases.

What the court decided

The Court of Rome accepted the legal action brought by Movimento Consumatori and ruled that certain clauses used by Netflix to manage price increases were not valid. The issue was not only the price increase itself, but the lack of clear contractual reasons behind it.

Which increases are involved?

The ruling concerns price increases applied to Netflix subscriptions in Italy between 2017 and January 2024. Reports indicate that the Standard and Premium plans were particularly affected.

How much could users receive?

Estimates suggest possible refunds of up to around €250 for some Standard plan users and up to around €500 for some Premium plan users. The actual amount would depend on the plan, subscription history and months actually paid.

Why this matters

This case is important beyond Netflix. Today, more and more services operate through subscriptions: streaming, cloud, software, sport, gaming and AI tools. The ruling highlights the need for transparent and justified price changes.
