Babbel is one of the best known language learning platforms in the world, with over 16 million subscriptions sold and a teaching method developed by a team of more than 150 linguistics experts. In this guide, we look at how the app works, what features it offers, which languages you can learn, how much the various subscription plans cost, and how to proceed if you want to cancel.
What is Babbel and how does it work
Babbel is an app and web platform for language learning aimed at an adult audience, with short lessons (10-15 minutes) designed to fit into everyday moments, such as a daily commute. The method is based on smart repetition of active memory, designed to help vocabulary and grammar structures stick over time, rather than relying on shallow rote learning.
Guide to Babbel's features
Babbel goes beyond classic digital lessons, offering several tools designed to make studying more complete and engaging:
- Short interactive lessons, organized by level (from beginner to advanced) and by topic, with writing, listening and comprehension exercises.
- Speech recognition, to practice pronunciation by comparing your voice with that of native speakers.
- Babbel Live, live online group classes with native speaking teachers, available for a limited number of languages.
- Podcasts and listening exercises, useful for training listening comprehension in real-life contexts.
- Language games, designed to review vocabulary and grammar in a lighter way.
- Review Manager, which automatically suggests content to review based on what has already been learned.
- Offline mode, available on the iOS and Android app, to download lessons and complete them without an internet connection, with automatic progress sync once back online.
- Progress tracking and certificates, to monitor your level and get a course completion certificate.
Reviews: what users say about Babbel
Babbel is generally appreciated for its clear lesson structure and for content designed specifically for each language pair, rather than generic translations. According to data released by the company, most users report noticing a concrete improvement in their language skills within just two months of consistent use. Among the strengths most often mentioned in reviews are the quality of the grammar content, the ability to study offline, and the attention to pronunciation thanks to speech recognition. Among the most frequent remarks, on the other hand, is the fact that a subscription does not automatically include every language, unless you choose the dedicated all-languages plan or the Lifetime plan, and that Babbel Live is not available for every language combination.
Languages available on Babbel
With a Babbel subscription you can choose to study a single language, or, with the dedicated plan, get access to all the available ones. The languages currently taught are:
- English (also for non-native speakers)
- Spanish
- French
- German
- Italian
- Portuguese
- Dutch
- Polish
- Swedish
- Danish
- Norwegian
- Indonesian
- Russian
- Turkish
Babbel plans and pricing
Babbel does not offer a fully free plan, but it does let you try the first lesson at no cost when you sign up. Paid subscription plans are structured by duration, with the monthly cost decreasing as the commitment increases:
- Monthly subscription: the most flexible plan, designed for those who want to try the service without a long commitment.
- 3-month subscription: a good compromise for those who want to test the method over a longer period.
- 6-month subscription: designed for those who want to approach learning more intensively.
- 12-month subscription: the option with the lowest monthly cost among the recurring plans, suited to those who want to learn at a steady pace over the year.
- Babbel Lifetime: a one-time payment that grants unlimited, permanent access to all available languages, with no renewals. The list price is €299.99, but it's the plan on which Babbel most often applies its biggest discounts.
The exact price of each plan can vary over time depending on promotions, region and purchase channel (website, App Store or Google Play), so it's always worth checking the current prices directly in the app or on the official website before subscribing.
How to cancel your Babbel subscription
Babbel subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period, but they can be cancelled at any time up until the day before renewal, at no extra cost. The process varies slightly depending on where you subscribed:
- If you subscribed on the website: log into your account, go to "Settings" or "Account information", find the subscription management option and select "Turn off automatic renewal". You'll be asked to confirm your choice and, once the process is complete, you'll receive a confirmation email.
- If you purchased through the App Store (iOS): open your device Settings, tap your name, then "Subscriptions", find Babbel and tap "Cancel Subscription".
- If you purchased through Google Play (Android): open the Google Play Store app, go to "Payments & subscriptions", find Babbel among your active subscriptions and select "Cancel".
Turning off automatic renewal doesn't mean losing access right away: the course stays active until the end of the period you've already paid for. You can also request a refund within 20 days of activating the subscription; after that period, you can still cancel at any time, but you won't be entitled to a refund of the amount already paid.
Take advantage of the Babbel Back to Work discount
If you're thinking about starting (or picking back up) a new language as things get back into gear after summer, you can take advantage of the Babbel Back to Work promotion: the Babbel Lifetime plan is available for just €199 instead of €299.99. The campaign will run from August 25 to September 6, 2026, a great opportunity for anyone who wants unlimited, permanent access to all 14 languages without worrying about future renewals.
